Minimum Wage Requirements Federal law sets the minimum wage in the U.S. at $7.25 per hour. However, there are some exceptions to the minimum wage requirement. Employees under 20 years old can be paid a "training wage" $4.25 per hour for the first 90 days of employment. Employers cannot replace an employee earning the minimum wage in order to hire an employee at the training wage rate.
